In the early 80’s Patrick Smith was looking for a comfortable carry option for some backcountry ski gear as he was touring in the mountains west of Golden, CO. The Mountainsmith Day, the largest of our Lumbar Pack series, was born out of the necessity to carry an avalanche shovel, water and gear for a BC ski tour in the Colorado high country.

Thirty years later, the Day still functions as originally intended but this iconic bag has become so much more…whether regarded as the first true messenger style bag (kids in my (Jay Getzel) college in the 90’s wore the Day slung over a shoulder with books for school), a great commuter or travel bag or the great hiking/ski touring piece it still is today, the Mountainsmith Day is an integral part of not only our history but of our current line.

New for 2012, the Day TLS (Technical Lumbar System) now includes an electronics sleeve for iPads, e-readers, netbooks, etc. as well as updated water bottle pockets, an updated recycled PET fabric body fabric and improved meshes and foams. Click here to check it out! Day TLS
