I got this to replace a much heavier Gregory Rainier (the largest pack Gregory ever produced). The Apex is nearly 3 lbs lighter, just as functional, and very comfortable. This thing can hold a huge amount of gear, and I'm thinking either Mountainsmith is being conservative in calculating its capacity, or other manufacturers are overestimating their capacities. This easily holds as much as the 8000 cu/in rated Rainier. The top knot is very large, easily holding first aid, lunch, map, utility kit, compass, gps, beacon, and the rest of my sundries. The lower zip compartment easily holds my summer bag, pad, and tent (all very small and light). The main pack is cavernous, easily holding my kit cube traveler (camera gear), another smaller camera case, clothes, food, stove. Even with all this in the bag, I have to take up slack using the side straps. The heaviest load I've packed was just shy of 60 lbs and the pack handled it easily. I don't think it would have any trouble with an 80 lb load. Materials and stitching are top notch - no signs of wear after 3 trips with fairly heavy loads. If you need a freighter that can easily expand to swallow an expedition's worth of gear, this is your pack.
