It is big for a lumbar pack and heavier than ultralight packs with more capacity.
But, this pack is amazing as a motorcycle pack. When you wear it, the pack rests on the seat behind you instead of on your back. It looks good and you feel much more stable on the bike than with a rucksack.
And... It doubles as a great tailbag. I clip it on to my rear rack and use the bottle holders to carry extra petrol. Then when you get to camp, you just unclip it and wear it as a pack.
This bag is a 100% better tail bag for dual sport riding than most of the tail bags available for motorcycles. I wish I could post pictures.
I have been a big believer in the lumbar pack for many years now. My only concern with them was that they were too small. My son has a Tour and I always admired how well it was put together, so when I decided to upgrade my old Kelty Summit, I went with a Mountainsmith Day TLS. Wow! Here you have a brilliantly designed pack for those of us who want to take "just a little bit more" on our excursions. There's a place for everything, it seems. I'll never use the laptop sleeve, but it seems to me it would fit a hydration bladder. Who knows? The bungees on the outside make a convenient place for my Z-seat, and the water bottle sleeves are easy enough to reach once you've broke 'em in a bit. Better still, I almost forget I'm wearing it…it has the capacity of a backpack with the easy carry of a lumbar. The "strapettes" are awesome…they should come with the bag, I think, they're so essential. So far as durability is concerned, well, I've been using my Day for almost three years and it still looks brand new, despite my usual (lack of) care for my gear, on trips from short jaunts in nearby packs to ten milers at LBL. I have never lacked for anything. If I had a complaint, it would be that both the strapettes and the waist belt on the Day could be somewhat longer for those of us of somewhat larger stature. We like to hike too, you know…
This is my third edition. I love the first one but wanted the second one due to the pocket on the waist belt and the tablet section in the main compartment. The new version I love I like how they added the zipper to the pocket on the belt and love the mollee on the front to attach items to. I use the strappettes when hiking.
It is amazing how I go to this bag first for hiking, at the gym, and around town. It is so versatile.
Didn't think they could make it better but sure enough the Day has been improved. I purcahsed my original in 1998 and it is now finally time to replace it. I am glad to see that MSmith is using cordura fabric again so this one will last another 18 years! Also, the molle style webbing is super handy.
