Top-notch Daypack
by Lou on 9/11/2016
The Grand Tour maintains that legendary Mountainsmith durability and integrates modern features in a proven, vintage design. This pack sports the very successful arrangement of compression straps and D-rings that had been a staple on older Mountainsmith packs such as the Bugaboo, the Frostfire, and (of course) the original Grand Tour.

Throughout the years, I’ve owned several different Mountainsmith backpacks and used them extensively while backpacking recreationally or when leading small classes in the Pacific Northwest. I would not hesitate to bring the Grand Tour in the backcountry because of the excellent build quality and versatile lashing points.

These days, however, I don’t take as many trips to the wilderness as I used to, but the Grand Tour has proven extremely useful for my daily use. The main pocket fits my motorcycle gloves and ½ helmet, and the fleece-lined pocket securely holds my sunglasses.

The laptop sleeve easily accommodates the giant (15.6”), clunky, laptop I was issued at work, and the comfortable straps and ergonomic design help to distribute the significant weight of the laptop as well. Any boring files I don’t want to transport anywhere are also easily transported in the same sleeve which helps prevent bending those envelopes marked “Do Not Bend.”

Interior organization in the Grand Tour makes packing and finding the charger a breeze when the laptop’s battery inevitably begins to fail after about 30 minutes of use. It also holds the pens I must bring to the office since apparently none can be ordered there. One of the pockets accommodates perfectly my planner, which I can quickly grab (along with one of my pens) to jot down whatever “important” meetings I need to attend throughout the week.

While sitting in the office, it’s easy to take a glance at the Grand Tour and imagine it sitting propped against a tree instead of a filing cabinet, loaded with camping gear instead of office supplies. The pack is great. It has superior build quality and design details that make it useful for every situation.

Another selling point should be Mountainsmith itself. This company’s service is absolutely outstanding and always has been. Their products basically don’t wear out, they just wear in. If something does ever happen to your product, the lifetime warranty will ensure it is promptly returned after being fixed – I practically begged to pay for a repair to my Bugaboo after roughly 15 years of use, but they honored their warranty instead. Your money couldn’t be better spent on a pack.
